How can I assess whether an alternative fund is right for me?

You can consider whether an alternative fund is right for you from several perspectives:

  1. Understanding the strategy and assets. What does the fund actually do? Real estate (what type? residential, logistics, offices?), private equity (what sector, what size of companies?), loans (what type of borrowers, what collateral?). How does it make money? Rent, coupons, interest, capital appreciation, commissions, restructuring?
  2. Manager analysis. Experience: how many years has the manager been active, how many funds has he managed, what documented results does he have? Alignment of interests: does the manager invest his own money in the fund? Are there clawback clauses on performance fees? Supervisory authorities (ASF in Romania) look at these issues in the authorization and supervision process, but the ultimate responsibility for assessing the quality of the manager remains with the investor.
  3. Liquidity, time horizon, and personal profile. How long is the money locked up? Is there a lock-up period, redemption windows, a possible secondary market? Does it fit your personal plans? If you cannot leave your capital locked up for 5–10 years, the percentage invested in that alternative investment fund should be small, or you should look for another product.
  4. Cost structure and net return scenarios. Read the fees: administration, performance, additional costs. Create a gross return scenario (optimistic, realistic, pessimistic) and deduct the fees to see what remains net.
  5. Compatibility with risk tolerance and the rest of the portfolio. What percentage of your total assets would this investment represent? If this fund performed very poorly or tied up your money longer than you expected, would it significantly affect your financial situation?
